Drowning - Whitewater Lake

At approximately 5:30PM, the Whitewater Fire Dept was notified of a possible drowning on
Whitewater Lake. Crews arriving on scene were advised of 2 subjects attempting to retrieve a
personal water craft from the lake. During the attempt to recover the craft, a young adult male,
not wearing a life vest, experienced distress and went under the water.

Crews searched the water for over 3 hours, locating the drowning victim just after dark. The
death investigation is being led by the Walworth County Sheriff’s Dept.

We now know the identity of the victim in Friday’s drowning accident. Courtland Cornelius, age
19 of Palatine IL was pronounced dead at the scene after being removed late Friday (May 25th)
evening from Whitewater Lake.
